How To Eat Right While You Hike

An important part of taking good care of your body is that you make sure you eat right, and hiking is a great way for you to keep your body in good shape – but many people who go hiking fail to draw the correlation between these two things, realizing that eating healthy while you hike is also important. Food, of course, is the main place where your body gets its energy, and when you are exerting yourself all day long, you will want to also be replenishing by eating the right foods; here are a few foods for you to consider when you are going hiking, as all of these will be easy to bring with you and will give you the energy you need.

Fruit: When it comes to eating healthy, not much beats fruit, and it is also great for giving your body energy; when it comes to eating fruit while hiking, you can go with fresh fruit such as bananas or oranges, or you can go with dried fruit, which is lightweight and easy to carry around with you, while still giving you all the health benefits of regular fruit.

Granola: Another thing that will help you have energy as you hike is granola (and granola bars), as granola is oat-based, and oats will do a lot to keep your body going; you can purchase granola at the grocery store, or you can make your own granola using oats and a variety of ingredients.

Trail mix: The calories that you will find in a trail mix that includes nuts and chocolate will give you a lightweight snack that provides a lot of energy – and if you can find a trail mix that also has dried fruit in it (or even granola in it!), you will be in even better shape.

Among these options, it should be easy to find one that works for you, and this will enable you to not only treat your body right with a hike, but to do so while also giving your body the healthy energy it needs.

The Benefits Of Using A Juicer

There are a lot of ways to get the fruits and vegetables you need in your body each day – not the least of which is actually eating these fruits and vegetables – but when it comes to creative ways to get all the health boosts that come from fruits and veggies, nothing is easier than using a juicer! Some people make sure that at least one of their meals each day consists of juice, while others have found that they enjoy a juicer so much that they have tried an all-juice diet; regardless of whether you are looking for an extra meal option or for a lifestyle shift, using a juicer is a great option to take a look at.

Of course, there is a certain amount of fruits and veggies that your body needs every day, and the first benefit of using a juicer is that it will enable you to get these fruits and veggies every day in an easy manner, and all at once, as you will simply need to make a drink using a couple different fruits and veggies to fulfill all your body’s needs in these areas.

Drinking juice is also a great way to lose weight if you are looking to shed a few pounds during the summer; instead of eating a bagel or toast for breakfast, you can switch to some homemade carrot/apple juice (or to something else equally delicious!), and fill up in the morning without packing your body full of carbs.

Check out these 103 great juice recipes!

And while some people automatically imagine that homemade juice must not taste very good, there are actually a number of different fruits and veggies that taste wonderful when turned into juice – and there are plenty of combinations of these fruits and veggies that will give you a marvelous treat!

With a juicer in your kitchen and a book of great juice recipes in hand, you will be on your way to staying healthy and losing weight, all in a delicious and easy manner!

Weight Loss Principles You Can Trust

If you’ve been trying to lose weight by trying fat diets, you’ll want to learn about the weight loss principles that have been proven effective. Don’t give up. You can lose weight if you stick to these principles: Make sure you watch your caloric intake. Yes, there are a zillion fad diets out there that will tell that if you only eat this or that, you won’t have to count calories, but that just isn’t true. Recent studies show that net caloric intake (that means how many calories you’ve consumed, minus the calories expended as energy during the day) is the baseline factor in successful weight loss efforts.

Work out five days a week or more. You need to build muscle, which will burn fat even when you’re at rest, and you need to expend calories each day. Instead of burning yourself out one day and giving up for the rest of the week because you’re so sore, incorporate moderate exercise most days of the week. Switch up what kind of cardio exercise you do in order to push your body to do it’s best.

Stay hydrated by drinking water. Not only will water make you feel full, it’ll also flush fat out of your body and help you feel energetic enough to exercise. If you drink water, you won’t reach for high-calorie drinks when you’re thirsty.

Choose healthy food options. Read up on what foods are best for your body and gradually make small changes to your diet. Replace unhealthy foods with healthy options, one by one. As you make dietary changes, you’ll discover new foods you enjoy that are better for you.

Don’t go it alone. Ask a friend to act as your diet buddy, commit to a weight loss community or organization, or pay someone to keep your accountable. You are more likely to succeed if you have accountability and companionship as you make these changes.

If you follow these basic weight loss principles, you’ll discover success is just around the bend.

Cooking Fresh Artichokes

Although artichokes are very easy to cook, many Americans have never tried to cook one. They really should not be as they are very nutritious and can be a lot of fun to eat. These interesting veggies are high in fiber, vitamin C, folic acid, and biotin. Vitamin A and potassium are also found in artichokes but not as high levels. There isn’t much to cooking artichokes.  Here is a basic example of how to do it.

Artichokes do have thorns, but that is not surprising since they are in the thistle family. You can easily remove the thorns by cutting off the tips of the leaves with kitchen scissors. The top fourth to third of the top of the artichoke can be cut off as the leaves are small and don’t have much flesh to them.

Start some water boiling and salt the water and add a generous slice of lemon to it. Place the chokes in boiling water. You can tell when artichokes are done cooking when you can easily pull off one if its leaves.  Don’t be surprised if this takes 50 minutes. Remove your artichoke from the boiling water and allow to drain.

I like to melt some butter and add lemon, salt, and pepper to it to dip my artichokes in. What you then do is pull off a leaf you will only be scraping off the bottom part of the leaf that was connected to the artichoke. Once you have dipped the fleshy part of the leaf, put the leaf about half way into your mouth.  Carefully put your teeth together and pull.  You will scrape the fleshy part and leave the leaf behind.

Once you have eaten all of the fleshy parts of the leaves you will be left with a fuzzy looking “choke”. You will need to get a spoon and scrape off the fuzz. The fuzz is not edible. After you remove the fuzz you will see the “heart” of the artichoke. The heart is good to eat. The stem may or may not be to your liking.  This is personal preference. I don’t like the texture of flavor of the artichoke stems.

Want a fun date night food?  Artichokes can be it.  Take turns feeding each other. It is well work the time and effort to eat artichokes because of the nutritional value they have.

Are Vitamin K Supplements Necessary?

Have you heard you should take vitamin K? You may have heard a lot of buzz about vitamin K creams and vitamin K supplements, but you need to make sure this is right for you before you try them.

Your body needs vitamin K to grow properly. It is also necessary for proper blood clotting. Most people get enough vitamin K from their regular diets and never even need to think about vitamin K. It is readily available in meat, dairy, and leafy greens. You don’t need much vitamin K, so you most likely get plenty from your diet.

Of course, if your blood does not clot properly, your doctor may recommend you take vitamin K supplements. This is usually prescribed as a tablet or capsule, but can also be sold as a cream. It is usually prescribed by a doctor and should be taken as prescribed. It is not uncommon for newborns who appear to have problems with rpoper blood clotting to be given injections of vitamin K.

Sometimes people self-prescribe vitamin K for bruising, dark circles under the eyes, or to improve the effectiveness of cancer treatments. It’s important to check with your doctor using vitamin K supplements for these reasons. Doctors aren’t sure vitamin K really supports cancer treatments yet. Be careful not to make broad assumptions about the impact of vitamin K quite yet.

A serious danger is the effect of vitamin K on those who already have a propensity for developing blood clots. Consider this scenario: If you are a woman who wants to use vitamin K to reduce circles under your eyes, but you also use oral contraceptives (and are therefore already at risk for blood clots), you may create a dangerous situation for yourself, all in pursuit of vanity.

It is in your best interest to consult your physician before taking vitamin K supplements.

Nutrition Tips For A Healthy Heart

When you were a kid, you probably had a teacher who told you to clench your fist and look at it. And then, they said, “This is how big your heart is.” You could do this same exercise right now, but even though you might still be surprised to find how small your heart is, you surely will not be surprised to know how important it is. The body cannot function without blood, and without the heart, the body receives no blood. Because of this, a healthy heart is one of the most important things you can maintain in order to have a healthy body. The heart might seem like some abstract object tucked away inside your body, but actually, there are lots of tangible things you can do to keep your heart healthy.

Eating healthy is a big part of maintaining a healthy heart, but there is more to this than just plain eating healthy; you also have to know what foods are good for your heart. Salmon is one of these foods, as it can keep you from having abnormal blood clotting; another food that is good for your heart is leafy green vegetables, which can decrease calcification in the arteries. Apples can be very good for preventing blood clotting also, and almonds can actually help to regulate the heart rhythm. Oats and green tea both help to lower cholesterol, and green tea can have the added benefit of relaxing your arteries. You can watch both your heart and your body begin to perform better as you learn what goes into a heart-healthy diet.

There are also a lot of different supplements that can help the cardiovascular system in a lot of different ways. Add Omega-3 essential fatty acids to your diet if you want to reduce inflammation in your blood vessels. You can find Omega-3 essential fatty acids in certain foods, and you can find it in supplements that are made in order to provide you with this element. Vitamin B6 is another important supplement for helping the heart function properly, as is magnesium.

There is plenty that you can do to improve your heart’s health and happiness, but the first steps begin with eating foods and adding supplements that will help your heart. By knowing what these foods and supplements are, you are well on your way to having a healthy heart.

Lose Weight By Changing What You Drink

Are you frustrated with your weight loss efforts? You’ll easily cut 100-250 calories out of your daily diet if you choose healthy beverages and eliminate the unhealthy. By making these little changes, you can lose that extra weight.

Fall in love with water. If your tap water isn’t yummy, use a Brita Filter to vastly improve the quality of taste. You may think all bottled waters, taste the same, but they don’t, so experiment a little. Add slices of lemon, lime, or cucumber to your water to add an unsweetened taste.

Cut sweeteners out of your hot beverages such as coffee or tea. Sugar is one of the biggest enemies of weight loss, being empty calories that leave you craving more. Begin by limiting the amount of sweetener you use, and slowly using less and less. Because artificial sweeteners have recently been linked to weight loss problems (per medical studies), you will want to avoid these altogether. Focus on the end goal: enjoying your hot beverages without sweetener at all.

There are several teas and coffees that are good without any sweetener at all. You may fall in love with Good Earth Original Blend tea, which is spicy and sweet, or perhaps you’ll find a flavored coffee you’ll enjoy. It will take a time of adjustment, but eventually you’ll get used to it.

Tell yourself soft drinks are completely off limits. Sugar sodas are full of empty calories–about 140 calories worth in every can of soda. Diet sodas are linked to weight gain, to the mystery of most dietitians. Common explanations are that either artificial sugars interfere with your body’s ability to metabolize calories, or artificial sugars increase your cravings for more sugar. You may find seltzer water reduces your cravings for sodas.

Stop drinking so much juice. While the sugars in juice are natural, they are still sugars. Don’t fall for the ones that are supplemented with artificial sweeteners—remember, these fake sweeteners have been linked to weight gain. When you feel a need to drink juice, limit the amount to about four ounces and view it as a treat.

If you switch your beverage choices to healthy options, you will lose weight and feel better, too.

What Do I Do If I Am Working Out But Not Losing Weight?

Although many people have a desire to live life at a healthy weight, it can be difficult at times to attain this desire. After all, you might work out vigorously every day, and you might not be making any real progress on your weight at all! But while many people have this problem – working out until they are exhausted every day, but seeing no results – part of this is because of the diets people are sticking to.

Many people do not realize how big of a role the food you eat plays in the weight at which you will find yourself. And if you want to hit a desirable weight, you will not necessarily need to put yourself on a rigorous eating plan, but you will need to eat healthy. If you are not eating healthy, it might not matter how much you work out – your weight will remain the same.

When it comes to eating well, it is actually less about how much you eat and is more about what you eat. In fact, you will actually be better off eating large amounts of foods that are good for you than eating small amounts of foods that are bad for you.

When it comes to eating healthy in order to manage your weight, the first option is to find a diet that you feel comfortable with. The problem with diets, however, is that they often leave you feeling unfulfilled, which makes them difficult to stick to.

The other option – when it comes to trying to eat healthy in order to manage your weight – is simply to eat foods that are good for your body! You will actually find that you have a much easier time managing your weight if you move away from processed foods and instead start eating foods that are organic and healthy. And furthermore, you will probably find that these organic foods taste much better than what you have been eating, and they fill you up more quickly!

It is not necessary for you to work out a ton, even if you want to lose a ton of weight; it is, however, vital that you start eating healthy!

Tips For Drinking Clean Water At Home

Every day, it is important that you get enough water into your body; after all, continued hydration is a big part of continued health. But many people fail to drink even close to enough water each day, and part of the reason for this lack of water is because – quite frankly – their water tastes no good. If your water does not taste satisfactory, chances are you will be unlikely to drink the eight glasses of water (one gallon) that you should be drinking each day. You can watch your health improve as your water intake increases, as soon as you follow these tips to enable yourself to have clean, tasty water to drink at home.

Of course, one of the best (and most transportable!) ways to get clean, tasty water all the time is to buy bottled water. At the same time, however, bottled water can cost quite a bit of money – especially if you buy it by the bottle. With bottled water, you should plan to buy it in bulk, as this will allow you to always have water to take with you wherever you go while also getting a good deal on it.

If you want the taste of bottled water without the price, consider getting a water bubbler in your own house. You can usually buy the bottles that go with these for as little as $5 or $10, and at such stores as Walmart you can buy water for about $0.33 per gallon. Additionally, you can take this water with you everywhere – just like bottled water – if you simply buy a reusable water bottle.

Of course, filtering water at home is also an option, and you can do this any number of ways. You can attach a filter to your sink; you can make sure the filtration system in your refrigerator is working; or, you can buy a stand-alone water filter.

There is no “best option” out of all of these – just make sure you pick one that works for you, and stick with it! Once you do, you will be able to drink delicious, clean water at home, and will therefore be able to drink as much water as your body requires!

Understanding Organic Meat

It costs more money to buy organic meat than it does to buy “regular” meat, but many people still buy organic because these animals are treated better. But there are more considerations that might encourage you to shell out a few extra dollars for organic meat, and one of these considerations is your health. When it comes to a comparison of what goes into producing organic meat and what goes into producing cheaper meat, you can begin to see why organic meat is so much healthier. After all, if the animals are kept in unhealthy conditions, this creates unhealthy animals; and of course, unhealthy animals translate to unhealthy meat!

There used to be no way of knowing just how “organic” meat was when you purchased organic meat. All a company had to do in order to label their meat “organic” was not feed them the hormones that would make them unnaturally bigger. Because of this, some companies still kept their animals in unhealthy conditions, and did the minimum necessary to label their meat “organic” and hike up the price.  All of that changed last November, however, when – in an effort to make sure consumers knew what they were buying – the Global Animal Partnership teamed up with Whole Foods.

The Ultimate Organic Lifestyle!

The Global Animal Partnership is a non-profit organization that aims to promote animal welfare, and that furthermore aims to focus on animals that are raised in order to be “organic” meat. And now, in their partnership with Whole Foods, they take steps to certify the level to which all the meat sold is organic. On both the Whole Foods website and the Global Animal Partnership website, you can find what each of the five “steps” of organic meat means. Once you are equipped with this knowledge, you can shop for meat knowing just how healthy the animal’s conditions were, and how healthy the meat will be for you.

While some people feel that it is necessary to buy organic meat because they care about animal welfare, others might simply buy organic meat because they care about their own welfare! Whatever the case, consider making the switch to organic meat yourself – whether for the animals, or even just for your own health!
